Collaboration with Guy Hundere.
Like the iconic acacia tree in Africa the shade structure design is intended to be a dynamic and functional solution that will be unique to San Antonio. It will help to provide a sense of place in areas of our city where it can be unbearable to walk during numerous months of the year. It is modular in that it can be placed at various locations in downtown San Antonio depending on the need for shade. It can be increased in size so that it can reach across both sides of a street to achieve an “alle”. The shade structure will also contain solar panels on the “leaves” above which will then power tiny up lights that will illuminate the entire structure at night. The color of the LED lights can be changed for Christmas, Fourth of July or other local events. It will have other functions such armatures to hold seasonal banners, brackets that are lower on the column to lock bicycles on to and it can be integrated with parking meters when applicable. With San Antonio’s wealth of craftspeople and metal workers it envisioned that these modular components will be mass produced for cost efficiencies.
